Here at Jalopnik, we love the Mazda6. Formerly known as the 626, Mazda’s midsizer was always the fun alternative to boring offerings from competing manufacturers. Not only does the Six compete with other midsizers, it also competes against sport sedans such as the Caddy ATS, the Audi A4 and the Mercedes C class. Let’shave a look at the best iterations of the Six from the past 40 years.

10 - 1980 626 Coupe

With its classic lines, frameless doors and competent engine, the 626 coupe punched way above its weight. It was often referred to as the poor man’s W123 coupe.

9 - 1985 Mazda 626 Hatchback

With this car, Mazda litteraly out-saab Saab. It came at the exact same time and completely obliterate its Swedish challenger in terms of sales.

8 -1994 Mazda 626 Cronos

The Cronos V6 manual was a very engaging car for the price. Quicker and cheaper than an E36 BMW 325i and a lot more fun to drive.

7 -1986 Mazda 626 Coupe

A beautiful coupe powered by a turbo 4 mated to a 5 speed manual, the 626 coupe was in some way, the poor man’s BMW M635CSi.

2 - 2015 Mazda6 Touring

The current gen Six is one of the best car on the market right now. It’s even more true when equipped with the touring package. A great alternative for the BMW 335i.

1 - 2006 Mazda Mazdaspeed 6

A reliable and inexpensive E39 M5 that is only available with a manual. A true masterpiece.

Came here to be THAT GUY and yell about your ranking...

saw MS6 as no.1...

Leaving happy.

Though based purely on these pictures, I’d have put the ‘80 626 at number 8, maybe 7 with the 2002 sport moved down (I say based on these pictures because the front end of the 626 is rather unsightly).

Also, I love how you basically refer to each car as a poor man’s ___.
